Psycholinguistics is a science that studies the relationship between language, consciousness and psychology.
One of the central hypotheses of psycholinguistics is the hypothesis of the linguistic relativity of Sapir-Whorf.
It postulates that our language — both written and spoken — affects our thoughts and feelings, we see the world through the language window.
The development of science has allowed us to look into this window and in the opposite direction.
By the way one talks and writes much can be told about one’s personality.
Initially, any psycholinguistic analysis was locked to tests or other strict studying techniques.
However, digital age offers us an opportunity to conduct a psycholinguistic analysis of a person in their natural communication via social media, e-mail or work chat groups. In 2013 with the use of open vocabulary analysis a group of scientists from Cambridge and Northern Illinois University have managed to establish the “Big Five” of personality traits for Facebook users. The same method could be applied to effectively determine one’s IQ. Recently researchers in Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a computer analyzing process that was able to detect depression-like behavior by evaluating the language content in persons twitter account.
The conclusions made by the psycholinguistic computer analysis turn out to be significantly more accurate than traditional ways psycholinguistic evaluation. For example, the MIT algorithm predicted the development of depression several years before the diagnosis. Besides, the computer mechanism of recognition of personality traits also appeared to be more accurate than users’ self-evaluation.
